Chelsea Close In on Nigeria-Eligible Defender

Chelsea are closing in on a deal to sign Nigeria-eligible defender Honest Ahanor from Italian side Atalanta, with negotiations between the clubs now at an advanced stage.

The 18-year-old has already agreed personal terms with Chelsea, while the proposed deal is understood to be worth around €40 million. However, the agreement is not yet fully completed, with the two clubs still working on the final details of the transfer.

Ahanor joined Atalanta from Genoa in July 2025 for a reported €16 million, having developed through Genoa’s youth system. He enjoyed a breakthrough campaign last season, making 35 appearances in all competitions, including 22 Serie A appearances, nine Champions League outings and four Coppa Italia matches, scoring once.

The young centre-back is currently valued at €30 million and is contracted to Atalanta until June 2028. Ahanor primarily operates as a centre-back but can also play at left-back and in left midfield. He has represented Italy at youth level and has since made two senior appearances, while remaining eligible to represent Nigeria through his Nigerian heritage.

Chelsea’s proposed agreement could see Ahanor join another Premier League club on loan this summer to continue his development before moving to Stamford Bridge in June 2027. The Blues are understood to be deciding on the best pathway for the highly rated defender as they continue negotiations with Atalanta.
