Moffi scores as Onyedika’s Frankfurt dump Hamburg out of German Cup

Super Eagles forward Terem Moffi scored for Hamburger SV, but his effort could not prevent the German side from crashing out of the DFB-Pokal following a 3-1 home defeat to Raphael Onyedika’s Eintracht Frankfurt on Tuesday, Naijafooty.com reports.

Moffi found the net in the 79th minute after Frankfurt had scored three times in the second half to take control of the encounter. The goal was his second for Hamburg since joining the club during the summer transfer window, having previously scored in the Bundesliga against Hoffenheim.

Frankfurt captain Robin Koch broke the deadlock in the 56th minute before Jonathan Burkardt doubled the visitors’ advantage in the 71st minute. Substitute Younes Ebnoutalib then struck just four minutes later to make it 3-0, leaving Hamburg with a mountain to climb.

Onyedika featured for the entire 90 minutes, helping Frankfurt secure a place in the last 16 of the competition. The Nigerian midfielder made his ninth appearance for the Bundesliga outfit since joining from Belgian side Club Brugge during the summer and helped his team return to winning ways after their league defeat to Borussia Dortmund at the weekend.

The defeat extended Hamburg’s losing run to two matches following their 1-0 loss to Paderborn in the Bundesliga last Saturday. Frankfurt, meanwhile, will take confidence from the cup victory as both teams prepare to meet again in the league on Sunday, November 1, with Hamburg seeking to respond and Frankfurt aiming to build on their progress in the competition.
