Libyan Premier League side Al-Afreeki SC have signed Nigerian defender Arinze Ogbonna from Kwara United in a transfer reportedly worth $40,000, as the 22-year-old centre-back embarks on a new chapter of his professional career outside Nigeria, Naijafooty.com reports.
Ogbonna’s move to Libya represents an opportunity for the young defender to gain experience in a different football environment while strengthening Al-Afreeki’s defensive options. The club will be hoping his qualities can help improve their backline as they compete in the Libyan top flight.
Sources familiar with the deal said Ogbonna is expected to earn approximately $5,000 per month at his new club. However, the duration of his contract and the precise financial terms of the agreement have not been officially disclosed.
The defender previously featured for Kwara United in the Nigerian Professional Football League, where he continued his development before securing the move abroad. His departure adds to the movement of Nigerian players seeking opportunities in other African leagues and further afield.
Reports about the defender have also highlighted his physical presence, with a reported height of 1.97 metres, which could be an asset in aerial duels and defensive set-piece situations. His ability to compete physically and contribute to building play from the back may offer Al-Afreeki additional options in defence. For Ogbonna, the switch offers a chance to adapt to a new league, establish himself at his new club and continue progressing as a professional footballer. Regular appearances and consistent performances could prove important as he looks to build his reputation beyond Nigerian football.
Al-Afreeki, meanwhile, will be hoping the Nigerian defender settles quickly and becomes a dependable presence at the heart of their defence. With the reported move opening a fresh chapter for both parties, Ogbonna will be aiming to turn the opportunity into a successful spell in Libya.
