The fifth edition of Cycling Lagos has ended with organisers, coaches and parents calling for greater investment in grassroots cycling to unlock the potential of young Nigerian riders and create more opportunities beyond football.
The event has continued to grow as one of the country’s notable grassroots sporting programmes, promoting cycling as a means of improving fitness while providing a pathway for talented youngsters who aspire to compete at national and international levels. Cycling Lagos President and CEO, Bamidele Adeleye, said the initiative was designed to promote healthy living and encourage wider participation in the sport.
Adeleye stressed that cycling should not be limited to professional athletes, urging families, children, corporate organisations and government agencies to embrace the sport. He also pointed to the strong participation of young riders at this year’s event as evidence of the talent available at the grassroots, while noting that cycling could contribute to employment and other opportunities within the wider sports industry.
However, the high cost of bicycles and other equipment remains a major obstacle for many aspiring cyclists. Organisers are therefore pursuing their “1 Million Bicycles” initiative, launched to improve access to bicycles across Nigeria. Coach Amao Kamoli also appealed to sponsors, parents and government authorities to provide stronger support, noting that regular competitions can help young athletes remain focused and develop their abilities.
Parents have equally highlighted the equipment challenges facing young cyclists. Quadri Rashida, whose daughter is involved in the sport, said many grassroots riders train with ordinary BMX bicycles rather than specialised racing bikes. Cycling Lagos will now expand its reach to Kano State in November, with organisers seeking partnerships with local governments and other stakeholders to strengthen grassroots cycling and create a broader pathway for Nigerian riders.
