Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey captained Fulham for the first time in a competitive Premier League match during their season opener against Chelsea at Craven Cottage.
The 26-year-old Nigerian centre-back was handed the armband by new manager Álvaro Arbeloa in the absence of regular captain Tom Cairney, who is sidelined with a knee injury, and Joachim Andersen, who was suspended. Bassey had previously captained the side in pre-season matches against Málaga and Stuttgart.
Despite the milestone, Fulham suffered a 3-2 defeat to Chelsea. João Pedro opened the scoring in the first minute, before Josh King equalised for the hosts. Chelsea regained the lead through Morgan Rogers, with Cole Palmer adding a third. Gonzalo García pulled one back for Fulham, but they were unable to find an equaliser.
Bassey played the full 90 minutes in an unfamiliar right centre-back role, completing 77 of his 80 passes with a 96% accuracy rate and making two tackles. He was booked in the 76th minute. Fellow Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi also featured for Fulham in the match.
The decision to name Bassey captain reflects the growing trust Arbeloa has in the defender, following strong pre-season displays and his recognition as Fulham’s Player of the Season in the previous campaign.
