Atlético Madrid manager Diego Simeone has apologised to Ademola Lookman for playing the Nigeria international as a centre-forward, admitting that the position does not suit the forward’s best qualities.
Lookman has started the new La Liga campaign as Atlético’s No. 9, including Sunday’s 2-2 draw against Villarreal. Simeone has been forced to use the 27-year-old in the position because Alexander Sørloth is injured, while Julián Álvarez is still working his way back to full fitness.
“I have to apologise to Lookman; I know that’s not his position,” Simeone said, acknowledging that the Nigerian is more effective when operating from wider attacking areas.
The Argentine coach explained that playing Lookman centrally limits some of his biggest strengths, particularly his ability to dribble, take on defenders, create chances and attack from wide positions. Despite the tactical adjustment, Simeone praised the forward’s attitude and willingness to help the team during the injury crisis.
Simeone confirmed that Lookman will return to his preferred attacking role once Atlético’s regular forwards are fully available. The Nigerian joined Atlético from Atalanta and will be hoping to return to a position where he can maximise his attacking influence as the Spanish season progresses.
