Charlton Athletic have emerged as the leading candidate to sign Nigeria international goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo from Wrexham before the close of the summer transfer window. The 24-year-old has been informed that he is free to leave the Welsh club after falling down the goalkeeping pecking order.
Okonkwo has one year remaining on his Wrexham contract, and the club are willing to allow him to leave on loan if a potential destination agrees to take responsibility for his wages. However, Wrexham’s preference remains an outright sale.
Charlton have already contacted Wrexham over a possible loan deal, but the proposal has stalled because the League One club want a permanent transfer. Other Championship clubs are also understood to be monitoring the goalkeeper.
Okonkwo joined Wrexham permanently from Arsenal in 2024 after initially spending time at the club on loan. He has made more than 100 appearances for Wrexham and played a key role in their rise through the English football pyramid.
The goalkeeper recently switched his international allegiance from England to Nigeria and made his Super Eagles debut earlier this year. A move to Charlton could provide him with an opportunity to secure regular first-team football, but any deal will depend on whether the Championship club can agree to Wrexham’s preference for a permanent transfer.
