Nigeria’s Super Eagles have been drawn alongside Madagascar, Tanzania and Guinea-Bissau in Group L of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, Naija Footy reports.
The six-match campaign will determine which of the three non-host nations secures the group’s available qualification ticket.
1. Tanzania’s Presence Changes Qualification Battle
The group comes with an unusual twist because Tanzania are among the co-hosts of AFCON 2027 and already have a guaranteed place at the finals. This means Nigeria, Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau will effectively battle for one remaining ticket, making every point particularly important.
2. Super Eagles Cannot Afford Slow Start
Nigeria will need to begin the qualifiers strongly when the opening two matchdays take place between September 21 and October 6, 2026. The team will then return for two fixtures in November before completing the campaign with the final matches between March 22 and 30, 2027.
Three parts of the group stand out:
- Madagascar give Nigeria another opponent with recent experience of competitive African qualifying campaigns.
- Guinea-Bissau have reached four of the previous five AFCON tournaments, making them familiar with this level of qualification pressure.
- Tanzania remain part of every sporting calculation despite entering the group with their finals place already secured.
None of those points changes Nigeria’s status as Group L’s highest-ranked and most decorated side. They do explain why the table may prove less comfortable than the names alone suggest.
3. Madagascar Could Cause Problems
Although Nigeria remain the strongest side on paper, Madagascar cannot be dismissed. The island nation have gained valuable experience in recent African competitions and will see the qualifiers as an opportunity to challenge one of the continent’s traditional heavyweights.
4. Guinea-Bissau Also Pose A Threat
Guinea-Bissau have become regular participants at the AFCON finals and possess enough experience to make the group competitive. Nigeria will therefore have to approach their meetings with the Djurtus seriously, particularly because there is little margin for error in a group where only one non-host team can qualify. 5. Six Matches To Decide Nigeria’s Fate
The Super Eagles’ route to AFCON 2027 will be decided across six fixtures spread over three international windows. Following the difficulties encountered during their recent World Cup qualifying campaign, Nigeria will be expected to show greater consistency and avoid unnecessary dropped points if they are to book their place at the tournament in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.
