Nigeria’s Super Falcons have been knocked out of the race for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup after a 2-1 loss to South Africa in their playoff at the Moulay Rachid Stadium in Casablanca on Thursday, Naija Footy reports.
This defeat dashed Nigeria’s hopes of advancing in the inter-confederation qualification playoffs.
Coach Justin Madugu adjusted the lineup, introducing Asisat Oshoala, Francisca Ordega, and Uchenna Kanu to the starting team following their previous loss to Cameroon in the WAFCON quarter-finals. Though Nigeria struggled to gain control early on amidst South Africa’s aggressive pressing, Oshoala and Deborah Abiodun managed to create opportunities during a scoreless first half.
South Africa eventually took the lead shortly after halftime. Hildah Magaia found space and delivered a low cross to Thembi Kgatlana, who scored from close range despite Chiamaka Nnadozie’s attempt to save. In response, Nigeria increased their attacking efforts, but goalkeeper Kaylin Swart made a vital save to deny Uchenna Kanu.
Banyana Banyana extended their lead in the 76th minute when Refiloe Jane’s shot was deflected by Christy Ucheibe, deceiving Nnadozie. Nigeria gained a glimmer of hope late in the game when Jane was sent off for handling the ball on the line, enabling Ucheibe to convert the penalty and narrow the score to 2-1.
Despite Nigeria’s desperate attempts to equalize during stoppage time, Swart made another crucial stop to block Michelle Alozie’s close-range effort. The final whistle confirmed Nigeria’s exit, marking a disappointing conclusion to their WAFCON journey and a significant hindrance in their bid for the 2027 World Cup qualification.
