Orban’s Goal Rush Rekindles Super Eagles Debate

Gift Orban is forcing his way back into the conversation around the Super Eagles after a blistering start to the Turkish Super Lig with Amedspor. The 24-year-old striker has scored seven goals and provided two assists in six league appearances, putting him among the division’s leading scorers.

Orban’s latest contribution came in Amedspor’s 3-2 victory over Beşiktaş, where he scored and provided an assist. His current run also includes a hat-trick against İstanbul Başakşehir, underlining the dramatic turnaround after his previous spell with Hellas Verona. Last season in Italy, he scored seven goals in 28 Serie A appearances.

The Nigerian forward is currently valued at €7 million, while his previous clubs include Stabæk, Gent, Lyon and Hoffenheim. He joined Hoffenheim from Lyon in January 2025 in a deal worth an initial €9 million, having previously moved to Lyon from Gent for €14 million.

His latest move to Amedspor is initially a season-long loan from Hoffenheim. Amedspor paid €500,000 for the loan, with a mandatory purchase clause that will be triggered if Orban reaches 10 league goals. The permanent transfer has been set at €3 million, payable in instalments, meaning he needs only three more goals to make the move permanent.

While his club form is undeniable, Orban’s international future with Nigeria remains complicated by his unresolved eligibility situation linked to his Nigerian-Togolese background. He was previously called up by José Peseiro in 2023 but never made his Super Eagles debut. With seven goals already in Turkey, however, his performances are once again putting his name firmly in the conversation.
