Nigeria’s Super Falcons could face Morocco in the third round of the African qualifiers for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games if they overcome Comoros in their ongoing second-round tie, Naijafooty.com reports.
The development follows the withdrawal of the Republic of the Congo from the qualifying competition, which has handed Morocco a passage into the next round without playing their scheduled second-round fixtures.
The Royal Moroccan Football Federation confirmed that FIFA had informed it of the Atlas Lionesses’ progression after the Congolese Football Federation pulled its women’s team out of the race for Olympic qualification. The third-round fixtures were initially scheduled to feature the winners of Nigeria’s tie against Comoros against the victors of the Morocco-Congo encounter.
The Super Falcons began their campaign on a positive note with a 2-0 victory over Comoros in the first leg of their second-round contest at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne, Ogun State, on Friday. Augustine Eguavoen’s side will seek to complete the job in the return fixture to secure a meeting with Morocco between February 23 and March 6, 2027.
A potential showdown with Morocco would revive memories of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations final, where the Falcons staged a remarkable comeback to claim their 10th continental title. Despite falling two goals behind against the host nation, Nigeria rallied in the second half to secure a 3-2 victory and deny Morocco the trophy.
The Falcons are seeking a return to the women’s football tournament at the Olympic Games after featuring at Paris 2024. However, the team must navigate four knockout rounds to secure one of the two places allocated to Africa at the Los Angeles 2028 Games, making every stage of the qualifying campaign crucial to their ambitions.
