The Super Falcons began their quest for a place at the 2028 Olympic Games on a winning note after defeating Comoros 2-0 in the first leg of their second-round qualifying tie at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne on Friday, Naijafooty.com reports.
Nigeria, the 10-time African champions, dominated proceedings for much of the first half but failed to make their superiority count in front of goal. Captain Rasheedat Ajibade came close to breaking the deadlock, only for her effort to hit the woodwork as Comoros held on to keep the score goalless at the interval.
The Falcons eventually found the breakthrough three minutes into the second half through defender Michelle Alozie. The Houston Dash player reacted quickly to finish from close range after Gift Monday’s header fell into her path, rewarding Nigeria’s sustained attacking pressure.
Alozie almost extended the hosts’ lead six minutes later, but the Comoros goalkeeper denied her attempt to prevent the visitors from falling further behind. Nigeria, however, continued to press for another goal as they sought to establish a commanding advantage.
Their efforts paid off in the 59th minute when Uchenna Kanu doubled the lead, converting from a corner kick delivered by Jennifer Echegini. The goal gave the Falcons greater control of the contest and strengthened their position ahead of the return leg.
The second leg is scheduled for Tuesday at the same venue in Ikenne, with Comoros unable to host the fixture because of the unavailability of a suitable stadium. The Falcons will aim to preserve their advantage and advance to the next round as they continue their pursuit of qualification for the women’s football event at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
