Super Eagles striker Paul Onuachu suffered an injury during Trabzonspor’s 5–0 victory over Gençlerbirliği last week, raising concerns over his availability for Nigeria’s upcoming 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
The 32-year-old enjoyed an impressive start to the game, scoring twice before being forced off after 44 minutes. His early withdrawal appeared to be linked to a possible muscle problem, prompting initial fears that he could face an extended spell on the sidelines.
However, Trabzonspor interim head coach Hüseyin Çimşir has moved to ease those concerns, insisting that Onuachu’s injury is not serious.
“There is no troubled situation,” Çimşir said, playing down fears surrounding the Nigerian striker’s condition.
The coach’s comments provide a positive update for Nigeria, particularly with Victor Osimhen already expected to miss the upcoming qualifiers. Onuachu’s potential absence would have further reduced Eric Chelle’s options in attack, leaving the Super Eagles with fewer experienced alternatives at centre-forward.
Onuachu’s availability for Nigeria’s September qualifiers will ultimately depend on his recovery and further medical assessment. While there is currently no indication of a long-term injury, the Super Eagles will be hoping the striker returns to full fitness in time for the crucial fixtures.
His two goals against Gençlerbirliği will also provide encouragement, as Nigeria could benefit from having a confident Onuachu available to lead the attack in Osimhen’s absence.
