Super Eagles captain Wilfred Ndidi has withdrawn from Nigeria’s international friendly against Russia, forcing head coach Éric Chelle to make a late change to his squad ahead of Tuesday’s encounter in Nizhny Novgorod. The reason for Ndidi’s withdrawal has not been officially disclosed.
Ndidi’s absence leaves a significant void in Nigeria’s midfield, with the Beşiktaş midfielder having been one of the team’s most experienced players. Chelle has responded by calling up Stade de Reims midfielder John Otomewo as his replacement, handing the youngster an opportunity to join the senior national team setup.
The coach has also added Tromsø defender Vince Osuji to the squad following the withdrawal of Victory Akpe. Both Otomewo and Osuji could now be in contention for their senior international debuts against Russia.
The Super Eagles are already in Russia after arriving in Moscow on Friday, October 2. The squad is now preparing in the country ahead of Tuesday’s fixture, while the foreign-based players continue linking up with the team from their respective clubs.
Nigeria will face Russia at the 44,000-capacity Nizhny Novgorod Stadium on Tuesday, October 6, with kick-off scheduled for 5:00pm. The encounter will be Nigeria’s second meeting with Russia, following their 1-1 draw in Moscow in June 2025.
