Italian Serie B club Benevento has finalized a deal to sign Nigerian forward David Okereke on a free transfer, Naija Footy reports.
The 28-year-old striker is set to undergo a medical examination before completing the move back to the Italian football scene, following his departure from Cremonese at the end of his contract.
Okereke is anticipated to bring valuable experience to Benevento’s attacking line. Currently valued at €1.4 million by Transfermarkt, with the latest valuation updated on May 29, 2026, the Lagos-born forward is versatile, able to play centrally or on either wing. He has built his career with stints in Italy, Belgium, and Turkey.
Most recently with Cremonese, Okereke took part in the 2025/26 Serie A season, where he recorded 10 league appearances, scored two goals, and played for 403 minutes. He notably scored against Fiorentina in March. Before that, he was on loan at Gaziantep in Turkey, scoring eight goals and providing three assists over 29 Turkish Süper Lig matches during the 2024/25 season.
Okereke is well-versed in Italian football, having previously played for Spezia, Venezia, and Cremonese. During his initial stint with Cremonese in the 2022/23 season, he netted seven goals in 33 Serie A appearances. He also had a tenure with Club Brugge in Belgium before returning to Italian football.
Benevento is now focused on finalizing the necessary paperwork and registering Okereke in time for their Coppa Italia match against Fiorentina on Friday. This move offers Okereke an opportunity to revive his Italian career, while Benevento hopes his past top-flight experience and goal-scoring ability can bolster their Serie B campaign.
