Super Eagles arrived in Guinea-Bissau for their upcoming match against the Djurtus on Tuesday, Naijafooty.com reports.
Last Friday, Eric Chelle’s team claimed victory in their first game of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, coming from behind to defeat Madagascar 2-1 at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium.
Despite their win, they are second in Group L, as Guinea-Bissau achieved a 2-0 triumph against Tanzania on the same day.
This sets up an exciting match on Tuesday. Although Nigeria, a three-time African champion, has some of the best talents on the continent, the Djurtus have players who can challenge Chelle’s squad.
Since facing Madagascar, the Super Eagles have been stationed in Uyo, with recovery and training sessions over the weekend before flying to Guinea-Bissau at 3 PM Nigerian time. The flight generally takes about four hours, and by 8:40 PM Nigerian time, images of their arrival at Aeroporto Internacional Osvaldo Vieira in Bissau were shared by the Super Eagles media team.
The team plans a single training session in the country at Estadio 24 de Setembro to get used to the pitch ahead of Tuesday’s game.
Nigeria and Guinea-Bissau first faced off in the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations and have played three more times since. In those encounters, the Djurtus secured a surprise 1-0 victory in Abuja in 2023. Although Nigeria avenged this loss in the return match, the defeat was met with strong reactions from Nigerian fans.
The Djurtus now boast a stronger squad with notable talents like Franculino Djú, Beto, and Mama Baldé, necessitating cautious play from Nigeria.
Under Coach Eric Chelle, praised for his attractive football style, the team has achieved 18 wins and three draws in 23 matches. However, Tuesday’s match poses a tough challenge, and securing all three points in Bissau would be a significant achievement.
