Nigeria’s teenage goalkeeper Christiana Uzoma has been nominated for the 2026 CAF Women’s Goalkeeper of the Year award following her outstanding performances for the Falconets at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Poland.
The 17-year-old Edo Queens shot-stopper is one of ten nominees for the prestigious award. The full list includes Khadija Er-Rmichi of Morocco, Andile Dlamini of South Africa, Cynthia Konlan of Ghana, Fideline Ngoy of DR Congo, Habiba Sabry of Egypt, Chloe N’Gazi of Algeria, Michaely Bihina of Cameroon, Mercy Sikelo of Tanzania and Fatoumata Karantao of Mali.
Uzoma was handed the Falconets captain’s armband just before the tournament after regular skipper Joy Igbokwe was unable to secure a visa. Despite her age, she provided strong leadership and delivered several elite performances between the posts.
Her standout display came in Nigeria’s 3-0 victory over England in the Round of 16. With the score at 1-0, she produced a crucial diving save to deny Rachel Maltby from the penalty spot, tipping the ball onto the crossbar. She finished the match with six saves and a clean sheet.
Across the tournament she played 422 minutes in five appearances, recorded 16 saves, kept two clean sheets and conceded only three goals.
Uzoma first came to international attention as the first-choice goalkeeper for the Flamingos at the 2024 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, where she played every minute of Nigeria’s four matches. At club level she has continued her rapid development with Edo Queens, contributing to their successful domestic campaigns in the NWFL Premiership.
Her strong form at the U-20 World Cup has already earned her a first senior call-up to the Super Falcons for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic qualifiers, underlining her emergence as one of the most promising young goalkeepers on the continent.
