Flamingos Set to Battle Puerto Rico After Opening-Day Defeat

Nigeria’s U-17 women’s national team, the Flamingos, will look to bounce back from their opening defeat when they face Puerto Rico in their second Group B match at the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco on Tuesday, October 20.

The match is scheduled to kick off at 7:00 PM Nigerian time (WAT) at the Mohammed VI Football Complex in Rabat, with Nigeria seeking their first points of the tournament after a disappointing start.

The Flamingos began their campaign with a 2-1 defeat to Poland on Saturday, October 17. Wiktoria Skrzypczak opened the scoring for Poland from the penalty spot in the 33rd minute before Natalia Skrok doubled their advantage in the 65th minute.

Nigeria responded late in the game through substitute Oluebube Umejiaku, who pulled one back in the 79th minute. However, the Flamingos were unable to find an equaliser before the final whistle, leaving them empty-handed from their opening fixture.

Tuesday’s encounter is an important opportunity for Nigeria to revive their campaign and strengthen their chances of progressing from Group B. A positive result would provide a timely boost ahead of their remaining group-stage fixture against Korea DPR.

With their hopes of advancing still alive, the Flamingos will need greater attacking efficiency and defensive discipline against Puerto Rico as they aim to return to winning ways and keep their World Cup ambitions on track.
