AFCON QUALIFIERS: Chelle Names Two New Players as Osimhen Returns to Eagles Squad

Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle is reportedly set to strengthen his squad with two new additions as Victor Osimhen returns ahead of Nigeria’s crucial double-header against Tanzania in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers. The expected changes come as Nigeria seek to revive their qualification campaign after a disappointing start.

Baník Ostrava defender Abdullahi Bewene and forward Kelechi Iheanacho are reportedly expected to join the squad. Bewene has attracted attention with his performances in recent international friendlies against Poland, Portugal and Russia, while Iheanacho is expected to return after scoring Nigeria’s opening goal in their 3-3 draw against Russia in October.

Osimhen’s anticipated return provides another boost for the Super Eagles. The Galatasaray striker missed the previous round of AFCON qualifiers due to injury but has since returned to club action. His availability would offer Chelle an important attacking option as Nigeria prepare for two decisive encounters.

Nigeria are scheduled to host Tanzania on Wednesday, November 11, 2026, before travelling for the return fixture on Sunday, November 15. The matches form part of Matchdays Three and Four of the qualifying campaign, with the venue for the home fixture yet to be confirmed.

With Tanzania already qualified as co-hosts alongside Kenya and Uganda, Nigeria must compete with Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau for the group’s remaining qualification place. Chelle will therefore be counting on the reported additions and Osimhen’s return to help Nigeria collect vital points and keep their hopes of reaching AFCON 2027 alive.
